Beavercreek Community Theatre Presents MUSICAL CHAIRS, 9/7

Beavercreek Community Theatre presents MUSICAL CHAIRS, directed by Matt Owens, running September 7-16, 2012.

This light-hearted show is a great ensemble musical about an audience watching a play. Joe Preston has not had a hit in years but is hoping his new play will revive his career. Unfortunately, he is at the mercy of an off-Broadway audience consisting of two typical "grey-haired matinee ladies", a married couple who argues all the time, an anxious young man waiting for his date, a not-so-bright singer trying to impress his date, a business man and his culture-vulture wife, three theatre critics, and Joe’s ex-wife. Poor Joe Preston!

Musical Chairs is the story of a playwright (Joe Preston) who has a new play opening off Broadway. The principal characters of the musical are Joe, his ex-wife Valerie, the show’s producer Matty, and twelve audience members who come to see the play. The audience members have their own story and background which is revealed and explored in dialogue and songs. For the vast majority of the show, most characters are “seated” facing the actual audience, as if the play they are watching is where the real audience is seated. They “step forward” for various musical numbers throughout the show.

Many Beavercreek residents are interested or involved in the arts, but without BCT there would be only limited opportunities for local residents to participate in theater in Beavercreek. Talented residents, including numerous young people, would have to go to other communities for theater opportunities.

Achieving our primary goal, community enrichment, was limited until we constructed a permanent theater--a wonderful new home for BCT. Through the generosity of the Lofino family, who provided space in the Lofino Senior Adult Enrichment and Cultural Arts Center, and numerous government organizations and private supporters, we now have the home we need, and are on the way to achieving our full potential! Our new home has allowed BCT to offer full seasons of theatrical productions (including well-known musicals, comedies, and dramas), to publicize and encourage community involvement in the arts, and to develop a Children's Theater program (offering youth productions and courses in theater production and performance). In order to achieve our primary mission, we are strengthening our membership and building teams of people in all areas of theater, including acting, directing, set design and construction, lighting and sound, costumes, make-up, stage management, and publicity.

BCT is open to anyone and everyone who wants to be involved in live theater, or who just wants to contribute to the community while meeting new people and learning new skills. Recent additions to our membership and our board have been focused somewhat less on theatrical skills, and somewhat more on business skills and community involvement, providing us with a more balanced mix of people who strengthen our offerings by strengthening our infrastructure and general support organization. There are so many ways we can become better at what we do that we always have room for anyone who wants to help.
